Masterlist of fic/essays/photosets

I’ve written for two fandoms, BBC Sherlock – my current obsession – and also a manga/anime called Yami no Matsuei. Everything I’ve considered worth preserving is listed below.

I’m a writer and editor IRL so I try to polish everything to a high level. I also like concrit and intelligent discussion of all sorts. I'm keen to friend other Sherlock fans who like the same things!

This is my personal, no-particular-schema, just oh-my-god-I-love this Sherlock fic rec list. Created for my own reference as much as anything. It was started August 2012 and will be added to probably fairly randomly. Expect BDSM, weirdness and a splash of darkness. Links are to AO3 where possible.

NB I haven't included warnings. Please check the header warnings on the fics themselves.

Ignore the asterisks, they're only meaningful to me.

Okay, the Fifty Shades film is looming ever larger. I see there is now a trailer.

With the build-up to the film, I’m going to try to promote London Leather a bit.

That’s not a very easy thing for me. I instinctively feel that if a novel is good enough it ought to somehow sell itself, even though I know that’s bollocks. I have six unpublished original novels in the drawer, and most will never see the light of day. I self-pubbed LL only because when 50 Shades hit I felt I couldn’t live with myself as a person with a hopefully deserved reputation of standing up for healthy consensual kink if I didn’t do what I could to get a better message out there.

Anyway… promotion works much better if it’s not the author doing it. People understandably think the author might have an agenda. So, if you liked LL and are not thrilled by the new wave of abuse-glamorization and BDSM-pathologization coming with the 50 Shades film, would you consider promoting LL somewhere? Posting on your own journal, or reccing somewhere, or submitting to a sex positive comm whose readers might be interested, or telling the media London Leather exists.

Don’t do it for me; do it for the teenage girl out there realising she’s a sub and thinking that means she has to be like Ana Steele. With any luck she’s found some decent fanfic to tell her otherwise, but let’s give her as many chances as possible to find her way.

All right, my 40-something tumblr-escaping LJ n00b friends, I've seen people confused by all these things so here's a quick starter list for LJ acclimatisation:

Friends lock
If you friend someone, they will be able to see anything you post publicly or under friends lock. You will also see their public posts on your friends page. Only if they friend you back will their f-locked material appear on your friends page.

Custom lock
You can create posts for a small, tailored group of people only. This also means your friends might be posting some things you can't see.

How to avoid talking into the void
It's not very likely people will stumble across your journal. To meet people, join communities and talk there. Sometimes if you friend someone they'll click over to your journal and investigate, but they probably won't friend you back until you've got a bit of content.

Tagging
Tumblr narrative-style tagging isn't really a thing on LJ, where tagging is more a way of people your own journal in order. Do it if you like but at time of writing it'll mostly advertise that you come from tumblr.

Read More cuts
Use lj-cut to create Read Mores. Type [lj-cut text="Read more under the cut"] - but use pointy instead of square brackets. [/lj-cut] gets you back to typing in the fully visible post. To do the same thing in a comment instead of a post, use lj-spoiler instead of lj-cut.

Anyone got any questions or things I should add? I am frankly shit at all things remotely internet-techy but have managed to din a few LJ procedures into my head by dint of having been a permanent account-holder for 10 years(!) now.

I feel I should post something here.

Who’s coming to Nineworlds and/or Worldcon?

I’ll be around at both on evenings and weekends. Don’t have enough annual leave to do all the weekday stuff.

Identity clash is going to rear its head. I’m pretty clear that Nineworlds is primarily fanspace and I’ll be there as pennypaperbrain. Worldcon, though… there’s RL friends and publishing acquaintances on the programme and I’m quite sure there will be other people wandering around who only know me as my professional self.

My policy these days is basically don’t promote and don’t deny. If anyone finds a newly-discovered aspect of my life surprising, well, that’s educational for them. Still, exciting variations on the following questions may arise from different directions (or if I’m lucky they could all happen at once in a group conversation):

You write fanfiction?!

You’re a pervert?!

Bipolar? You? Are you sure?!

You write fanfiction about perverts/mentalists?!

You write [written-for-hire stuff]?!

You edit [day job stuff]?!
You (used to) work for who?!

You self-published a novel about S&M?!

Or any combination of the above. Should this occur, I’ll be trying for a philosophical approach along the lines of ‘Why yes I am complex and interesting; surely you are too?’ I'm sure I won't be the only person present trying to maintain a balance of this kind.

(50 Shades, tho. I hate the thing, but there is a weird upside to it for me: as of its impact on the publishing industry, I challenge anyone in the trade to look me in the eye and tell me SM is anything other than a valid cultural topic.)

I need to do some curating over here. I'm going to unfollow some journals that appear to be dead (if I unfollow you and you care, yell), and investigate who's who. My LJ friending policy has always been that I prefer to know someone a bit before actually friending them... which can of course be tricky if that person does most things under f-lock. Perils of LJ.

This will probably take a couple of days.
pennypaperbrain: (Sherlock brain by redscharlach)
*waves* at new arrivals from tumblr. It's kind of quiet here. Or if it isn't you can f-lock everything and keep the wank out, o joy of peace.

To everyone else: guess what, the Sherlock fandom on tumblr has exploded into such wank that people are actually starting to come back to LJ. Possibly including me, though I am a total social media sheep and will only post here if other people do.

Akhmatova monument 3
Monument to Anna Akhmatova, looking across the river to Kresty prison. This is part of a monument pair, the statue of Akhmatova set back from the river and then the Monument to Victims of Political Repression on the embankment. These are in considerably better nick than the prison exterior. Akhmatova and environs seem to be properly cared for, complete with newly-dug flowerbeds in front of her. (Possibly this is because her environs are a car park, and cars are very important here; the monument pair is bisected by yet another massive embankment highway. But a high standard of maintenance is not the norm.) The complete lack of monumentage outside the prison itself makes a bit more sense once you cross the river and see what's there. It is after all a working jail, operating theoretical modern justice, as well as a site of historical injustice.

Monument to the victims of political repression 2
Monument to the victims of political repression.

Kresty2
Grubby Kresty prison environs and small hard-to-read plaque.

Kresty4
Prison. Not getting any more cheerful. Note meteor-like Russian attack preciptation.

Kresty and modern advert
Cultural montage. Over-grand yellow Stalin-era apartment building, unreconstructed prison, shiny western cars, and extremely au courant billboard. It's advertising self-contained suburban apartments with 'good neighbours guaranteed'. If I'm reading the cultural cues right, the viewer is supposed to identify with the ordinary little girl on the right, who can't do her ironing because the board is being hogged by an all-new, all-false and probably economically illegitimate New Russian sex goddess. Choosing who lives next door is a bit of an urban Russian obsession, after decades of living in state-allocated communal flats.

Lest there be doubt: I am alive! I just exclusively use tumblr because it’s where my fandom is.

I also appear to have been fixed by the NHS. After two years of chemical chaos I am now 10 weeks into a lithium + citalopram combination which seems to have jolted everything back to base sanity. Who knows how this will pan out in the long term, but right now I like it.

And this time next week I will be on my way to see eldritch-horrors in New Orleans.
